Andy Derrick
Andy was born in Bristol in 1973 and was lucky enough to attend a secondary school running the American Wind Band method which had every 11-13 year old performing on a wind band instrument once a week in a classroom setting. Andy quickly took to the trombone and later changed to bass trombone playing in the local orchestras and big bands.
In 1992 Andy started studying bass trombone and composition at the Birmingham Conservatoire under Alwyn Green (Bass Trombonist for the CBSO) and John Meyer (Indo-Jazz Fusions).
Since 1996 Andy has turned to performance, composition and teaching in all styles of music including work as an extra player with the CBSO and RLPO, lead trombone with the Fat Chops Big Band plus regular sojourns with the Rat Pack on both Bass and Tenor Trombone as well as a session player/horns arranger with Pop groups. Andy also leads his own groups, the ADJQ, Musessence and Grupo Latino.
His composing has featured a Tuba Quartet premiered at the 1st International Tuba and Euphonium Conference, works for Strings and solo Wind and Brass instruments and most recently a commission for the Bristol Brass Consort to write a jazz-themed Brass Quintet.
Andy also works as a consultant to the musicians and the music industry. Visit www.andyderrick.co.uk for more information.
