Bateman: Suite for Saturday - Junior Brass Band

This work was originally written for a Junior Brass Band with the title Suite for Saturday and was road-tested at a Band Day organized by West Sussex Music Service.    It became a piece for 2 clarinets with a version for clarinet and piano.  Its title then was Suite for Chloë. As you can see, the original title has been restored as being more appropriate for a full junior brass band and, inevitably, with regard to an Educational project, there is a strong didactic thread running through the sections of the Suite. 

For Openers requires a decisive attack, fanfare style.
Metro Gnomes demands articulative skill and metronomic precision. 
Smooth Operators encourages an efficient legato style. 
Best Foot Forward stresses rhythmic drive (alla militάre). 

Present in this Suite: 

The keys of Bb and Eb (C and F for Bb instruments-i.e.G and D for Eb players.)   Time signatures – 2, 3 and 4 are represented with various accents, dynamics, metronome markings and basic performance directions, and the whole project lasts a bit over 3 minutes.   

The word metronomically does not appear in my Chambers Dictionary but sounds acceptable (a bit like idiomatically and rhythmically that do appear) and will be a source of discussion amongst the young players.  You may use the play on words to introduce your band members to a real metronome – whether it is an old mechanical version or an up to the minute electronic variant with bells and whistles.  The old joke that you may consider worthy of repetition, is that a Metro Gnome is a small worker on the Paris Underground!
