The 3 Brass Dogs were written for the Dectet Kensington Brass as a light-music repertoire item in 2014. An acknowledgement to the great Chris Hazell who wrote the timeless and well-loved Brass Cats for Philip Jones and Elgar Howarth, these three movements are a homage to the cheeky melodies and gospel stylings of Hazell’s earlier music.
Kensington Brass received professional coaching during their inception at the Royal College of Music London in 2011-13 and the dogs are named after the pets of three of those professors who had an exceptional impact on the group.
Alfie is named after Nigel Black’s dog. Nigel had a big impact on the group both as Principal Horn of the Philharmonia Orchestra and as Head of Brass at the RCM, facilitating the ensemble’s first chamber music recitals and artistic vision. The movement is a bouncy gospel funk, inspired by the way Nigel would shout ‘Get out the way Alfie’ whilst on the phone from his home!
Hamish is named after Alistair Mackie’s pet. The teacher of every trumpet player that had ever played with Kensington Brass at that time, Alistair was an important part of developing the group’s sound. The movement is essentially a pop ballad, featuring a flugelhorn solo and 80’s style synth-like padding accompaniments.
The final Dog is named Amber, after Andrew Crowley’s canine. As the leader of London Brass, Andy gave the ensemble most of their first coaching sessions and amazing advice on running an ensemble of such size. Like the traffic light would also suggest, Amber is a rip-roaring speedy funk item with pulsating quavers, syncopated rhythms and flourishes for a rousing finish.
