This setting of the Alma Redemptoris Mater by Ziani (1707) for alto trombone, tenor trombone, voice and keyboard, is one of many settings of this prayer or Marian antiphon by leading Catholic Baroque and Classical composers in Vienna intended for liturgical use.
The original instrumentation for Ziani's setting was for alto solo, alto trombone (trombone primo), tenor trombone (trombone secondo), bassoon, violoncello (violone), and organo. Although the bassoon does often double the figured bass line, it also has completely independent melodic lines. The bassoon part in this edition is incorporated into the tenor trombone part or the organ/keyboard part, depending on context and range. In the second section, the bassoon has an extended obbligato, one that is joined by the tenor trombone midway through the section. In this edition, the entire obbligato passage has been included in the tenor trombone part, with the existing tenor part given to the alto trombone.
