This short piece was mostly composed in December 2022. The theme comes from a song group called "Sweet Sports" - specifically a setting of words written by the Earl of Essex as he awaited execution for treason in the Tower.

Variations 1-3 and 5 highlight component instruments (trumpets 1 and 2 are treated as a single unit). Variation 4 is an interlude and Variation 6 is a brief fugue.
