Animal 'Bones is a trombone quartet in 4 short movements, each with an animal connection:
1. Flighty Fanfare: a punchy phrase building to a loud finish.
2. Sleazy Sloth: Lazy, sleazy phrases for all players.
3. Ponderous 'Potamus Positions: begins with a chorale type introduction then a simple melody appears first in the 4th part then split between the other three, ending with a repeated 4 bar coda.
4. Slithering Slides: A bit of fun to finish with.
As a school music teacher and trombonist Mike Kempster has often been frustrated by the lack of interesting material for beginner trombone ensembles. This quartet was written to provide some music for the relatively elementary trombonist to experience the fun of ensemble playing with other trombonists. It attempts to demonstrate various aspects of the instrument, from the majestic and powerful, through the sweet and gentle to the humorous. He has to included well known idiomatic features of the instrument, e.g. slide vibrato, glissandi. Aspects of technique can be reinforced (legato, lip slurs, controlled forte playing etc) along with aspects of ensemble playing (tempo changes, awareness of balance between parts etc). Parts I & 4 (Bb/F or bass) are intended for slightly more advanced players, or indeed the teacher, whilst parts 2 & 3 are more elementary.
The publication includes both bass and Bb treble clef versions of the parts.
