Webb's composition is the winner of the 2001 International Trombone Association Composition Contest. Each of the Three Studies is an etude in a different style, each with a distinctly American bent.
The bold, extroverted first movement pays homage to the style of Copland and Bernstein, and techniques taught to many American composers by Hindemith. The second movement nods to George Crumb in its mysterious, diaphanous textures. The third movement flirts with minimalism. Both the first and third movements should be performed with rock-solid rhythm, the first with a syncopated punch, the third with a fleet groove.
