Completed on October 12, 1946, Florian Mueller’s Concert Music for Bass Tuba and Orchestra was composed for and first performed by Arnold Jacobs and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Désiré Defauw conducting, on April 19, 1947, at Orchestra Hall, Chicago. Its date of composition places it as one of the earliest original works for solo tuba and orchestra. Florian Mueller and Arnold Jacobs played first oboe and tuba, respectively, in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at that time. Dr. Richard Schwartz, Associate Professor of Music at Virginia State University, created this faithful band transcription of the work using Mueller’s handwritten manuscript. The composition was premiered by David Townsend, tuba, and the Richmond Symphonic Winds, Iris Schwartz, conductor, on April 21, 1998, at the Richmond (Virginia) Public Library and received a subsequent performance by Victor Collins, tuba, and the Virginia State University Symphonic Band, Harold Haughton, conductor, on April 14, 1999.

Florian Mueller was born in Bay City, Michigan, on June 15, 1904. He became an oboist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1927. From 1929 - 1954 he served that orchestra as its first chair oboist. Mueller began his composing career while studying for his Master of Music degree at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, Illinois. Concerto for Oboe, written by Mueller while a student, was performed by the composer with the Chicago Symphony in March of 1929. He continued composing works for various solo instruments, chamber groups, orchestra, and concert band throughout his life. A founder of Roosevelt University in Chicago, he taught there for many years and conducted its orchestra. In 1954 he was appointed Professor of Music at The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Mueller won the Ostwald Award given by the American Bandmasters Association for his Overture in G in 1960. After retiring to Florida in 1973, he continued composing, playing, and teaching private students. He died in St. Petersburg, Florida, on March 14, 1983.
