Faure was only 20 years old when he wrote this piece in 1865. Faure used text by the French dramatist and poet Jean-Baptiste Racine (1639-1699) from "Hymnes traduites du brevuare romain".
The piece bears its dedication to The Belgian composer Cesar Franck. It is played very often at weddings in France, just like, coincidentally, Franck's Panis Angelicus.
