The first movement of my Sonata for Horn, Trumpet and Trombone was originally composed as a single piece, under the title of Introduction and Allegro for Horn, Trumpet and Trombone. It was written as a partner piece to the well-known and much-loved sonata by Francis Poulenc for the same instrumentation, in preparation for a concert where a brass trio was to provide some of the evening’s musical entertainment. The music for this concert needed to be easy to listen to and accessible to an audience that would enjoy light classical music. It was therefore composed to be both tuneful and tonal in character, similar in style to music written during the Classical or Romantic periods.
The Introduction and Allegro for Horn, Trumpet and Trombone was composed sometime between 1990 and 1996 and I only know this because my printed copy of the music clearly shows that it was created using the Notator music software, which I used between these dates. Following its first performance sometime in the 1990s, the music remained filed away in an envelope and forgotten about for over 25 years! In July 2023, whilst I was looking for my copy of the Poulenc Sonata for a brass trio concert I had been asked to do, I came across it again and we decided to include it in our programme, giving the piece its second performance.
Upon reflection, following this concert, I decided that this piece could be used as a first movement of a Sonata for brass trio, so during the summer of 2023 I made some small amendments to it and composed a slow second movement in a similar neo-classical style. This movement was inspired by the Sarabande by Handel, which I had recently arranged for a brass group at one of the schools I teach in. The third movement was eventually composed in February 2024 and I once again stuck to a neo-classical style, composing a tarantella, inspired by the one composed by Rossini, which I had been teaching to trombone students for a number of years. Thus, many years after composing what has become the first movement, I eventually completed my Sonata for Horn, Trumpet and Trombone.
Whilst this Sonata was composed with a trumpet, French horn and trombone in mind, it can also be performed on cornet, tenor horn and euphonium and parts for Tenor Horn and Trombone or Euphonium in treble clef are also included. I hope you enjoy playing my sonata and your audiences enjoy listening to it.
