Tchaikovsky’s “Children’s Album” sometimes known as “Album for the Young”, Opus 39, was modelled after Schumann’s similar work. The pieces, originally for piano, were composed in 1878. There are 24 pieces in all. The four pieces chosen here (The New Doll, Folk Song, Old French Song and Italian Song) are suitable to be arranged for a trio of instruments.

Tchaikovsky wrote "A while ago I thought that it would not be a bad idea to make a small contribution to the stock of children's musical literature, which is very modest. I want to create a series of little individual pieces just for children, and with an attractive title, like Schumann's". These pieces accordingly have a light touch and are fun without sounding trivial. This selection is suitable to be played on a standard trio or section of trombones, 2 tenors and a bass. Several pieces from the set are based on authentic folk tunes. The theme of the Old French Song even appears the Minstrel’s Song in Act 2 of his Opera “The Maid of Orleans”. The Italian Song theme also appears as a theme in “Swan Lake”.

The repertoire for trombone trio from the 19th century is somewhat limited and is often religious or serious in nature. These pieces are secular and a suitable contrast to the aequale and other 19th century trombone genres. The arrangements are relatively short and pitched so as not to over-tax the players lips. They also share around the thematic material giving interest to each part. Because of their relative brevity, several or all of them, could be played as a sequence in a performance. They are of intermediate difficulty, playable by reasonable amateurs, and could be used as section practice pieces during the inevitable hanging around that orchestral trombones often experience.
