The vignettes are trombone sextet settings of the first four selections of the 8 Southern Jazz Duets by David F. Wilborn. The sextet scoring offers a fresh, and in some case, an alternative harmonic sound to the jazz duets. Here the composer explores expanded accompanimental textures and new harmonies that were not possible in the original duets.


1. Hey Reb, Pass The Biscuits!

Food plays a major role in Southern culture. One tradition that continues to be widely practice is Sunday dinner after church service. You can bet that if there’s food around, the local preacher might be making a call.

2. My, What A Wonderful Day

There’s nothing like a pleasant sunny day in Southern communities. You’ll find people out on porches socializing, kids riding bicycles, pedestrians walking around the neighborhood. And when it gets too hot, there’s sure to be a pitcher of sweetened iced tea around to cool you down.

3. The Nawleans Blues

The city of New Orleans has given us a wealth of jazz. Although blues music has a separate history, it also has jazz influences. Here’s a tribute to the city that started the jazz tradition.

4. Goin To The City

While teaching in rural Oklahoma, I was struck by the tendency of college students and local residents who referred to Oklahoma City as “The City.” I later found out that rural residents in other states also make reference to the largest state cities in the same way. One thing I’ve noticed, when rural residents say they’re going to the city, there’s a gleam of excitement and anticipation in their eyes. This vignette captures the upbeat spirit of goin to the city.
