The second movement of this work, Sea Mist, was written in February 2021 shortly after I started to live close by the sea at Lancing. The endlessly changing sea remains a fascination and Sea Mist came out of the ambiguity of the winter sea with focus softened by the mist that gathered and clung to the coast on some days. Having written it there remained a sense that it was going to be a middle movement of a longer work. I had, for a while, wanted to return to writing something a bit more substantial for the trombone after several light pieces. The last movement, Sea Spray followed in early 2022 and then I worked backwards, writing The Cry of the Gulls (with apologies to ornithologists who will tell me that the correct name for the seagull cry is a ‘Mew’). An alternative ending to the first movement is provided in case it is wished to play it on its own.
The Sonatina is harmonically ambiguous in places but always melodic and, while there are some technical challenges, will hopefully be fun to play.
