Gladiatrix from the Arena of Valor was commissioned in 2022 by the Texas Trombone Institute. The music is written for trombone octet (6 tenor and 2 bass trombones) for moderate-advanced levels.  

During the era of ancient Rome, gladiators were employed to fight each other or fight wild animals as entertainment in public coliseums. The female gladiator, known as a gladiatrix, might also be used in similar spectacles. Games involving gladiatrices were rare and were generally viewed as exotic. These female combatants had superior fighting skills and tended to fight with the same kind of battle equipment as their male counterparts. Over the course of the ancient Roman era, gladiatrices tended to be few in numbers. They were eventually banned from gladiator sports by 200 AD. 

Gladiatrix from the Arena of Valor opens with a solemn fanfare capturing the image of a gladiatrix who is preparing for battle at a Roman coliseum. The fanfare is somber and majestic. It portrays the greatness, honor and dignity of a formidable female combatant. Once the fanfare concludes, we perceive the impressive strength and battle skill of the gladiatrix which appears in the style of a march. The energy and bold character of the music is epic and powerful. A brief reprisal of the fanfare appears, thus reminding the listener of the gladiatrix’s honorable character. As the music concludes, it becomes clear from the driving rhythms and bold dynamics that the gladiatrix is victorious in battle and deserving of high praise. She is hailed a heroine of the first degree and worthy of equal adoration for courage, strength and battle skills as rendered to her male gladiator counterpart.
